Busy work lives, raising children, caring for aging parents or living with past family of origin trauma can put a lot of stress on relationships and create distance. I see couples who are struggling with all sorts of issues: infidelity, new parenthood, sexual issues, financial struggles. I've also met with couples that want "pre-marital counseling". Many of the couples I see are stuck, feel emotionally disconnected and would like to find new ways of communicating.
I make every effort to never "pick sides" and to listen carefully and to help find ways of taking “blame” out of the equation.
In childhood a secure attachment is about the feeling of love, safety, reliability and consistency in a strong relationship between the parent(s)/caregiver and child. As adults in romantic relationships, we look to our primary partner for many of the same things that we sought in childhood and when we feel alone, or misunderstood or hurt, the pain can feel unbearable leading to intense arguments at times bringing back feelings from childhood.
With time, attention, and real understanding, my primary focus is on helping to restore or in some cases to help create a new kind of attachment. Relationships can be the greatest source of growth, love, strength and stability.
